The sun shone on Saturday and hundreds of people from Mayfield and Ashbourne made their way to the MRA playing fields for the village summer fair.

With over 30 stalls and games, dog show, shire horses and mantrailing demo – there was plenty to keep everyone entertained.

Alder Carr Farm of Church Mayfield provided a brilliant barbeque with their own sausages and burgers. “Fantastic day at the Mayfield fair! Thanks to everyone who came, what a wonderful community event raising money for the local playground. We’ve had a good laugh, a few beers, and hope everyone enjoyed the sausages!

The tombola was very popular and raised over £200.

But the biggest fund raiser by far was the raffle. Ruby Stanley of Mayfield Snuggery won the top prize of £100, and straight away donated it back to the playground fund! Thank you Ruby and all the people and companies who donated prizes including Alton Towers, Wild Park paintballing, Duncombe Arms, Royal Oak, Nigel’s Butchers, Denstone Farm Shop, Peak Wildlife and Gullivers Kingdom.

In another event Longcliffe Calcium Carbonates donated a gallon of whisky (yes, a gallon) for the prize. A game of giant hoopla round the whisky decided the winner.

Caleb Allen won the Gallon of Whisky donated by Longcliffe Calcium Carbonates. David Turner presented him with his prize.

Other games included the popular welly wanging – won by Big Jim Gregory who managed to throw the welly a massive distance clear over the hedge, and the crossball challenge.

The Mayfield Arms moved their bar from the Memorial Hall to the pavilion for the day. Volunteers Simon Sowter and Mandy Sowter were kept busy all afternoon as people almost drank the bar dry. The Memorial Hall committee donated ALL the profits to the playground fund. Thank you!

Thank you as well to all the volunteers, stall holders, prize & produce donors, everyone who came and those who couldn’t make it but bought raffle tickets or made a donation. It was a great event and something for the entire community to enjoy.

Some comments left for us on Facebook summed up the mood:
